examine your missionAre you looking for practical ways to revitalize your sales team? One strategic approach is to examine your mission. Effective sales teams are guided by a distinctive and succinct mission. When sales seem to lag, that may be a hint that it is time to revisit your mission and adjust it as needed for optimum results.

Following are four ways to reconsider your mission.

  1. What is the purpose of your sales force? Avoid conceptualizing your response in abstract terms. Write the purpose in a single sentence with the goal of finding practical ways to revitalize your sales team.
  2. What are the outcomes achieved by your sales team? Describe their accomplishments briefly.
  3. During which times of the year is the department likely to drift from its mission? Be specific.  Does this tend to occur with larger or smaller clients?
  4. How does the sales team create customer value?

What’s an Example of an Effective Mission?

A quality mission should represent the sales team’s purpose and the organization’s basic function. The core purpose should underscore, align with, and guide the team’s daily operations.

One of our clients is a major organization that offers management systems implementation, training, and support. This is their core purpose, or core utility. Information training and technology enable business managers to become excellent site administrators.

Their sales force mission aims at the following goals:

Increase client profitability by 5% per year with efficient technology use and process enhancement in businesses we serve, leading to a 12% growth of our organization annually. Our sales team fully understands the product delivered to clients, along with annual sales expectations. The mission reflects customer choice, i.e., a target customer is expected to grow 5%, while the company (basing its fee on client progress) can grow 12%.

Capitalizing on the core utility of our business correlates resources that include people, processes, expertise, financing, and technology as practical ways to revitalize a sales team.

Operational efficiency is critical to the mission. In collaboration with other departments of an organization, the sales team maintains a sound production aspect that requires periodic review.  Examination of your mission is one key way to enhance sales.
