Action brewing on Healthcare Reform
November 12, 2009

I agree with Las Mastersoncommentary on healthcare reform about the likely outcome of the Senate reform bill.

He says it as well as anyone, and I encourage you to read this short article.

In short:

  1. Medicaid will be greatly expanded; I guess the middle class is now a vulnerable population.
  2. More insurance regulations will be added, but no anti-trust exemption removal; we want to make a turn, not tip the whole industry over.
  3. Complicated insurance exchanges will provide more options; there will be a new land-grab in the health insurance market.

We won’t get:

  1. A public government-run insurance program.
  2. A rigid individual mandate.
  3. A reversal of the anti-trust exemption for insurers.

At the end of this process one thing will be certain; health care reform is not over. Hospitals will be facing Medicare cuts but a (hopefully) larger pool of privately insured patients. Quality continue to be a dominant focus for providers, payers, and the public.
