How a Strong Management Team Can Drive Your Organizations’ Success
November 20, 2012An Introduction to Value Analysis
November 28, 2012While most people seem to believe that the push to create ACOs has had little success and minimal influence, research by healthcare consulting firm, Oliver Wyman (which we originally read about, today, in Healthcare Payer News), shows that between 25 and 31 million people in the United States get their healthcare through an ACO of some sort; and 45% of the population lives in an area served by at least one ACO. This represents a significant growth pattern for ACOs, which only really started 2 years ago.
The report estimates that 2.5 million are subscribed to a Medicare ACO, while 15 million are non-Medicare patients of a Medicare ACO, and there are 8-14 million participants in non-Medicare ACOs.
On the other side of the coin, while the CMS lists 89 ACOs to date, less than 6% of them are true ACOs, in that they fully engage in both the opportunity for financial gain and the risk of loss. The writers of the report believe that the First Movers will be in a strong position to move forward as the ACO engine gains momentum, while the Fast Followers will have to overcome a knowledge deficit to catch up, and those that fail to act will be left in the dust.
