success in business managementWinston Churchill once said, “The price of greatness is responsibility.”  We all know that leadership positions bring with them a great deal of responsibility.  That said, you may be wondering, what common habits do all successful business managers share?

We’ve compiled a list of six practices that will yield success:

1. Have a Clear Vision

As a manager, know where your business is going before you start going. Develop your mission…it should be actionable, measurable, with timing. Determine how you will set your business apart from all others. If you’re entering a market that’s highly competitive, know how you will be acknowledged as a more valuable choice. If you’re entering a niche market, know how you’re going to emphasize the need for your services to those customers.

2. Have Passion For Your Business

Don’t choose your business segment or market just because you’ve seen it work out for other people. The most successful managers feel passionate about the service they are providing, and the customer base they will serve. Choose a business segment that you know will keep you feeling excited and motivated about it every day.

3. Communicate to Your Team

Your team is your most valuable asset. The team must work together efficiently, or everyone suffers. Make sure your employees know the mission of the business, and communicate your passion for the business to them. The team needs to be operating from a motivated culture, committed to attain the same mission, and everyone should know their respective role in executing the plan.

4. Communicate to Your Customer

Make sure that your customers know what your mission is. Whatever makes your business special, communicate it so customers can see the value for them. They should always know what to expect from you, because people don’t like surprises when doing business. Make sure they know your team delivered “on the promise”. Always follow up with your customers after they are using your services/products. Make it easy for your customers to continue utilizing your services.

5. Be Committed, Be Consistent

Many people give up on a business or business segment early on if it doesn’t start to produce success right away. Setting the success measures of a business must be realistic and conservative. Allow some “ramp time” when starting or growing a business. If you miss the success measures consistently, and exceed the time point of success, then you might consider alternatives to the current plan.

6. Build Your Brand

This is the most important key of all. Your reputation is everything, among both your customers and your employees. By always treating your customers and employees with fairness and honesty, you’ll cultivate a reputation that will spread and attract more of the people you want to notice your business. You build your brand by earning it through consistent, effective, valued practices, which allow you and your team to deliver on your promise.

Question: What would you add to this list?
